As part of Oceanside coastal restoration efforts, offshore explorations are currently underway to determine potentially plentiful larger grain sand sources to replenish beaches, mainly south of the Pier where coastal erosion is most severe.  About 30 core samples are now being taken off the ocean shelf between the San Luis Rey River mouth and the Buena Vista Lagoon.
